How an IoT lighting solution uses a dual sensor ASIC

    New ‘intelligent eye’ provides huge business opportunities within IoT

    Gooee has developed an IoT Lighting Ecosystem that provides intelligent energy management, predictive maintenance and lighting analytics. The system, which is enabled by a dual sensor ASIC supplied by DELTA, can collect a multitude of on-site data and has been predicted a bright IoT future

    Gooee saw golden opportunities in combining its knowledge about light-sources with the Internet of Things (IoT). This has led to the development of advanced technology for the lighting sector where the sensor can be integrated into the LED lighting system.

    Gooee’s IoT business concept, which is built around LED luminaires, has already been predicted extensive growth opportunities utilising sales of big data and cloud services as a springboard for countless new business areas.

    How Gooee’s lighting system works

    A key component in Gooee’s lighting ecosystem is an ASIC sensor that combines multiple sensor functionalities. Based on Gooee’s application knowledge DELTA has developed and manufactured the sensor ASIC which is integrated within the LED luminaire. It collects data related to light, temperature, and human activity in the area and at the same time it monitors the performance of the LED chip.

    “We chose DELTA as our ASIC-supplier because they could demonstrate knowledge within sensor technology allowing the combination of environmental data with physical data,” says Simon Combes, CTO at Gooee.

    The collected data can be used to adjust the brightness of the light and maintain the light source in the area in question, whether it is office areas, shopping centres, or warehouses. For example, you can schedule replacing a defective light source in a supermarket, so that it does not take place while there are many customers in the supermarket. The system can also reduce the brightness of the light when the sun shines, or switch off the light completely when there are no people in the room.

    The control system speaks with ‘the cloud’

    The luminaires with the ASIC are controlled by the Gooee control system, which sends the collected data to the cloud via a wireless connection. The data can be accessed via an app, which provides the option for facility management functions, such as diagnosis and troubleshooting, localising defective light sources, and managing reports. This can save facility management teams significant time.

    A clever aspect of Gooee’s system is that you can connect other apps to control energy consumption and security, and monitor customer activity in the rooms. The data can be used for example to count how many customers there are in the store during the day, trigger fire alarms in the event of a fire, or control who has access to specific rooms and when.

    Simon Combes explains:

    “The ASIC DELTA is developing for Gooee is a generic hardware platform which together with software can be used for many applications. We have chosen to start with lighting where luminaires can be controlled. Furthermore, we can capture data from LED lamps and distribute it via our Bluetooth smart mesh network to any source.”

    Exciting development work with DELTA

    Gooee has already benefited from the collaboration with DELTA and looks forward to the next phase of the development process, where DELTA’s optical team also will participate:

    “Our co-operation with DELTA has firstly been focusing on demonstrating proof-of-concept using standard components. This has paved the way to an ASIC hardware specification. After approval of this, our next challenge to come is finding a way to integrate it into different luminaries. This is something the optical team of DELTA is going to help us with,” says Simon Combes.

    Gooee is positive about the future

    The launching of Gooee’s intelligent lighting system gives access to completely new business opportunities, which can move in many different directions, depending on the customers’ wishes and the capacity.

    “Gooee has a go-to-market strategy of selling chips or modules, depending on what our customers can handle. This particular product and reference designs are focusing on general lighting solutions such as retail and commercial spaces, but we will be exploring other markets like Green-tech, environmental waste, or other high-volume products that can be made intelligent,” says Simon Combes. He continues:

    “In general, we look forward to the continuation of the project where there are high hopes of selling volumes to different brands of luminaires. Furthermore, we hope for DELTA to become our strategic partner who can take these sensor chips into many other applications.”

    Nyt ’intelligent øje’ giver vidtrækkende forretningsmuligheder indenfor IoT

    Gooee har udviklet et smart sensorbaseret lyssystem, som automatisk regulerer LED-lampers lysstyrke, så de matcher lysindfald og kundeaktivitet i løbet af dagen. Lyskildesensoren, som er leveret af DELTA, kan indsamle et hav af data on-site og er spået en lys IoT-fremtid.

    Gooee så gyldne muligheder for at kombinere sin viden om lyskilder med IoT (Internet of Things). Det har ført til udvikling af avanceret lyskildeteknologi, hvor sensorer kan integreres i et LED-lyskildesystem.

    Gooee’s IoT-forretningskoncept, der er bygget op omkring LED-lamper, er allerede spået gyldne vækstmuligheder med salg af big data og cloud-services som springbræt for et utal af nye forretningsområder.

    Sådan virker Gooee’s lyssystem

    Centralt i Gooee’s lyskildesystem sidder en sensor-ASIC, som kombinerer mange forskellige sensor-funktioner. Med udgangspunkt i Gooee’s applikationsviden har DELTA udviklet og produceret ASIC’en, som integreres i LED-lyskilder, hvor den indsamler data om lys, temperatur og menneskelig aktivitet i området og samtidig måler LED-chip’ens ydeevne.

    ”Vi valgte DELTA som vores ASIC-leverandør, fordi de kunne demonstrere viden indenfor sensorteknologi, som gør os i stand til at kombinere miljødata med fysiske data,” udtaler Simon Combes, Chief Technology Officer hos Gooee.

    De indsamlede data kan bruges til at regulere lysstyrken og vedligeholde lyskilderne i det pågældende område, hvad enten det drejer sig om kontorlokaler, indkøbscentre eller lagerbygninger. Fx kan man planlægge udskiftning af en defekt lyskilde i et supermarked, så det ikke sker samtidig med, at der er mange kunder i butikken. Eller systemet kan skrue ned for lyset, når solen skinner, eller helt slukke for lyset, når der ikke er mennesker i lokalet.

    Kontrolsystem taler med ’skyen’

    LED-lyskilderne, som indeholder ASIC’en, styres af Gooee’s kontrolsystem, der via en trådløs forbindelse sender de opsamlede data til cloud’en. Her kan data tilgås via en app, der giver mulighed for facility management funktioner såsom diagnose og fejlfinding, lokalisering af defekte lyskilder samt styring af afrapportering. Det kan spare facility management teams for en del tid.

    Det smarte ved Gooee’s system er, at man også kan tilkoble andre apps til styring af energiforbrug og sikkerhed samt monitorering af kundeaktivitet i lokalerne. Eksempelvis kan data bruges til at tælle, hvor mange kunder, der er i butikken i løbet af dagen, sætte brandalarmen i gang i tilfælde af brand, eller styre hvem der har adgang til bestemte lokaler hvornår.

    Simon Combes uddyber:

    “Den ASIC, som DELTA udvikler for Gooee, er en generisk hardwareplatform, der sammen med software kan bruges til mange anvendelser. Vi har valgt at starte med belysning, hvor armaturer kan styres. Desuden kan vi opfange data fra LED-lamper og distribuere det via vores Bluetooth Smart mesh-netværk til andre kilder.”

    Spændende udviklingsarbejde med DELTA

    Gooee har allerede fået meget ud af samarbejdet med DELTA og ser frem til næste fase af udviklingsprocessen, hvor også DELTA’s lyseksperter deltager:

    ”Vores samarbejde med DELTA har først og fremmest fokuseret på at lave et proof-of-concept ved hjælp af standardkomponenter. Dette har banet vejen for en ASIC hardware-specifikation. Efter godkendelse af denne, er vores næste udfordring at finde en måde at integrere den i forskellige lysarmaturer. Det er noget DELTA’s optiske team skal hjælpe os med,” fortæller Simon Combes.

    Gooee ser lyst på fremtiden

    Lanceringen af Gooee’s intelligente lyskildesystem åbner for helt nye forretningsmuligheder, som kan gå i mange forskellige retninger afhængig af kundernes ønsker og kapacitet.

    “Gooee har en go-to-market strategi for salg af chips eller moduler, afhængigt af, hvad vores kunder kan håndtere. Dette særlige produkt- og reference-design fokuserer på generelle belysningsløsninger såsom detailhandel og kommercielle rum, men vi udforsker også andre markeder såsom Green-tech, miljøaffald samt andre højvolumen-produkter, der kan gøres intelligente,” siger Simon Combes og fortsætter:

    “Vi ser frem til at fortsætte med projektet, idet der er store forventninger til volumensalg til forskellige lysarmatur-mærker. Desuden satser vi på, at DELTA bliver vores strategiske partner, som kan indføre denne sensor-ASIC i mange andre applikationer.”
